The Personal Protection Institute will present our popular Basic Defense Shotgun Course (BDS-1) on selected weekend dates in 2011. These one-day programs are designed to prepare the law-abiding armed citizen to make maximum use of the shotgun in the context of personal or home defense. The Basic Defense Shotgun Course is ideal for those who are uncomfortable with handguns as defense tools, live in areas where handgun ownership is restricted, or who wish to supplement their defensive plans by the addition of a shotgun to their defensive battery. Students need only attend one session.
Course Content
During the program, students will be exposed to special techniques of safe storage and handling of shotguns, proper loading and unloading techniques, ammunition, and selection of appropriate accessories. Participants will be coached in the best methods of controlling shotgun recoil, as well as the zones of tactical employment of the shotgun with a focus on home defense. Students will be instructed in basic methods of shotgun weapon retention at close quarters. Shotgun wounding effects on the human body are also discussed.
Equipment Requirements
This course emphasizes the use of a shotgun that the student may already own for sporting purposes, and does not require the use of a so-called “combat shotgun” for successful completion. Instructors will help the student explore the differences between the sporting and defense-dedicated shotgun. Students who may already own defense-oriented shotguns are free to use these in class.
Students in the Basic Defense Shotgun Course will need a repeating shotgun in 12, 16, or 20 gauge. Any safe, reliable pump action, semiautomatic, or double-barreled weapon may be used. Loaner weapons are available with advance notice for students who have not yet purchased a shotgun. Each student will need 50 rounds of non-magnum bird shot, 25 rounds of standard length buck shot shells, and 10 rifled slugs. Each student will provide his or her own hearing and eye protection. Recoil reducing pads may be used if desired.
