Course Description
Advanced Threat Management (ATM) is a semester length (15 week) course designed to provide in-depth training
and education to the serious student of personal protection. The program will cover material taught in some of the
nation's finest self-defense training facilities and shooting schools, in a weekly evening format that in most cases will
not require overnight travel or extended absences from the student’s family or regular employment. Thus, the
information and practical sessions can be delivered at a much lower effective cost to the learner than even one week
spent at an out of town school. The student also has the opportunity to practice and refine techniques learned in the
classroom, without the time compression experienced in a weekend seminar setting. Three weekend live fire practical
sessions are also included, as well as practical simulations.
Topics to be addressed in this extended format course include, but are not limited to:
1. Mental Awareness and Attack Avoidance
2. Pre-planning For Defensive Situations
3. Force Continuum and Escalation of Force
4. Legal Issues in Self Defense (In Depth, Actual Trial Analysis)
5. Unarmed Skills in Self Defense, Empty Hand Techniques, Weapon Retention
6. Equipment Selection – Communications, Chemical Defense Sprays, Edged Weapons
7. Firearms Selection – Pistols, Shotguns, Carbines, Ballistics
8. Pistol Techniques – Practice Drills, Advanced Techniques, Concealment Issues
9. Support Weapons – Defensive Shotgun and Carbine Techniques
10. Tactics – Home Defense, Multiple Threats, Cover and Concealment, Movement

The course will be taught in a comfortable classroom setting, using a unique blend of Lecture/Discussion methods,
video and live demonstrations, practical exercises, and live fire training sessions at the range. Institute staff, guest
lecturers, and students participating in the teaching process will provide instruction. Students who cannot attend every
session will have the opportunity to view video resources from the classes missed. A complete resource notebook will
be provided to each student. Regular quizzes, examinations, and student return demonstrations will be part of the
program, to insure that students grasp major concepts and techniques. Night fire and force-on-force simulations are
included. Out of class assistance will be available to students by appointment.

Scheduling
The program will be offered one evening per week from 6:00 p.m. until approximately 9:30 p.m., unless directed
otherwise by the instructor. Classroom sessions will be held at a conveniently located facility in central Virginia.
Practical range sessions are planned for selected weekends. Students wishing to enroll in this program should
arrange their schedules so that they can actually attend 80% of the classroom sessions, and all three sessions at the
range.

Who Should Attend?
This course requires a significant investment of time, effort, and resources on the part of the student as well as the
staff. Therefore, only those truly committed to in-depth training in self-defense should consider enrolling. This
program offers a unique opportunity for the student to go beyond the training available in most basic firearm classes,
and to receive a well-rounded self-defense education. The program also offers the advantage of combining the best
techniques from the nation’s best schools, such that the student receives the benefits of each without having to attend
them all. Those likely to receive the most benefit from this program include:
1. Private citizens who desire a broad based education in self-defense.
2. Individuals working in high-threat environments.
3. Police / Security personnel desiring to go beyond academy level training.
4. Experienced shooters and others who intend to teach self-defense.
5. Anyone needing the tools to feel safer in an increasingly dangerous world.
Enrollment Requirements
Those wishing to enroll in ATM must be at least 21 years of age, be of good character and have no criminal history that
would disqualify them from possessing or controlling weapons. This may be established by providing a copy of a
currently valid Concealed Handgun Permit at the time of application. The student must also submit a brief written
summary of their self-defense and firearms experience, including prior formal training, law enforcement or competitive
experience. For an application, contact the Personal Protection Institute at (804) 257-7354, or e-mail to
info@ppisafety.com. All completed applications must be received not later than 14 days prior to the start of the course.
Payment must accompany the application, or other arrangements made prior to confirmation of registration.
Registration in Advanced Threat Management is strictly limited, so early application is advised.
Tuition and Other Expenses
The tuition for Advanced Threat Management is $899.95. This represents a fraction of the total cost for a week of
instruction at some other schools, not to mention the travel and lost time costs of compressed instruction away from
home. A tuition payment plan is available at no additional charge, which allows the student to pay for instruction in
three installments. Visa and MasterCard are accepted, and there is a significant discount for tuition prepayment.
Students with appropriate backgrounds and experience who successfully complete ATM may be offered employment as
Personal Protection Institute instructors. Contact the Institute for details. Course notebooks and other class materials
are included in the tuition payment. Students wishing to own their own copies of video resources used in class may
purchase them from the Institute at greatly reduced rates. Students are responsible for the provision of their own
weapons, ammunition, and safety equipment. Loaner weapons are available from the Institute as needed at no charge
for the shotgun and carbine sessions.
